What is an ETIAS? Currently, people from some countries, including the United States traveling to Europe do not need to apply for a visa before their arrival; They are permitted to visit 26 countries in the EU for up to three months without requiring a visa. Effective, July 1st, 2021, the rules will change. If you are visiting any of the Schengen member countries, you will require approval from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) which is an additional security check rather than requiring a visa.
The 26 Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemborg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
So, what is the approval process?
The ETIAS is a very short application process and can only be done online
Applicants will be asked to provide 1. A valid passport 2. A credit or debit card 3. An email address
You must apply at least 96 hours before travel
Everyone needs to apply irrespective of the age (including infants)
Cost for the application is 7 Euros and is waived for anyone under 18years.
Payment has to be made with a debit or credit card
The application will be checked against some security watch databases. If you are approved, you will receive approval via email. If you are denied, you will be provided with a reason which can be appealed
The ETIAS travel authorization is valid for three years and to multiple countries
Your approval will be checked before you board as well as by border security upon entry into the EU
